Hornet protection
This hot-dip galvanized mesh attachment is placed in front of the hive entrance, making it difficult for the hornet to approach directly. Experience shows that the hornet must first land on the wire before it can gain entry. Bees, on the other hand, can easily reach the entrance from above while remaining behind the mesh.
What else should you consider? We also recommend using a mouse and hornet guard wedge to provide the best possible protection for the bee colony.
When should the guard be installed? The hornet guard should remain on the hive from approximately late August until mid- or late November, depending on weather conditions. Crucially, the Varroa tray must be kept inserted so that the colony cannot be disturbed by hornets from below either.
The muzzle prevents the hornets from directly approaching the flight hole. Most bees are attacked by the hornets at the flight hole, making them easy victims. Experience shows that the hornet has to sit down first after passing through the muzzle before it can enter.Behind the grid, the bees can get to the flight hole from above.
